Police Funeral Procession

Canarsie, Brooklyn - 1903

Fullerton Funeral Home was founded in 1903 by Daniel J. Fullerton in Canarsie, Brooklyn, NY.  Mr. Fullerton originally ran a dry goods store, with caskets being one of the items sold. This led him into the funeral business and the store was converted into a funeral home.

With the influx of families moving to Long Island from Brooklyn, his son, James E. Fullerton, opened the Baldwin branch on Merrick Road, a few doors from St. Christopher’s Church, in 1937. The funeral home was already well known to many new residents moving to Baldwin from Brooklyn. In the early 1950’s due to the requests of patrons wanting to have services outside of their homes, the Baldwin funeral home was expanded to add two chapels for viewings. The Brooklyn funeral home was sold in 1968 and with that, the Fullerton Funeral Home was again expanded, adding two more large chapels and a parking lot. Jim’s sister, Helen Ryan, also played a large role in helping families during funerals until her passing in 1995.  Daniel J. Fullerton, Jim’s son, began working with his father in the funeral home at a very young age. He graduated from The American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 1962.  With the passing of his father in 1976, Dan took over the reigns as President.

Daniel J. Fullerton passed very unexpectedly after a brief illness on December 29, 2004. His wife, Barbara is now the owner/president of Fullerton Funeral Home. Part of the work she does is helping families cope with their loss through a family support program in the form of booklets and literature which is provided to all families.

Matthew J. Fritz, Dan and Barbara’s son-in-law, has been working at the funeral home full time since Dan’s passing and has been associated with the funeral home for almost twenty years, is now a Licensed Funeral Director. In 2005, Matt began providing families with video tributes made in house included free with all funerals. He was one of the first to do so on Long Island.  Just like Dan, Matt became a graduate of The American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in 2007.  Matt has been instrumental in modernizing the way the funeral home is run to the standards of today. He is now the fourth generation to continue the compassion and trust the Fullerton family has provided for so many years.  As of 2011 Matt had officially become the Licensed Manager of Fullerton Funeral Home, Inc.  Matt has taken over as manager from Timothy J. Donohue who has been associated with the funeral home for many years.  Tim had stepped in as the manager upon Dan's passing and for six years had done a wonderful job as the manager for the funeral home.

In 2008, the funeral home went through an extensive remodeling project to provide better comfort and service to all our families.  Our chapels are now more spacious.  The lobby, offices, sitting areas and restrooms has been completely remodeled and modernized while keeping it warm and comfortable for their families.

For four generations, Fullerton Funeral Home has served thousands of families at the most difficult time in their lives. Helping families plan a funeral that is meaningful to them is so important because of the healing powers associated with the funeral rituals.

You are invited to journey through our website and/or make an appointment for a tour of the funeral home to learn more about what can be offered to your family.
